Target species relative to the time of year:
January, February and March
During the winter months in Hatteras, weather is always a factor but there are still plenty of fishable days. The main target this time of year is the Giant Bluefin Tuna! Anglers travel from all over the country to experience the thrill of fighting one of these magnificent giants. We see a migration of Bluefins ranging from 75-550lbs. They’re found anywhere from right outside Hatteras Inlet to the wrecks, Rock Pile, and the Rocks. It is an incredible experience to see Giant Bluefins feeding in a ball of bait, so be sure to bring your camera.
This time of year closer to the beach we catch King Mackerel, and on the shoals we catch Rockfish (Stripers) and Red Drum. Further offshore we catch Yellowfin tuna typically in the 30lbs range with Blackfin tuna mixed in. |
April
In April, Yellowfin Tuna is our main catch. Yellowfin tunas put up a great fight and are typically in big schools so multiple hookups are a common occurrence; It is not unusual to hook one on every line. There is also the chance to catch wahoo, dolphin (mahi), and Blue Marlin on our Hatteras Fishing Charters. |
May
The Hatteras fishing in May largely depends on the water temperatures. If the temperatures stay cool the Yellowfin tuna will hang around longer but when the temperature begins to rise the Marlins and Dolphin begin to appear. As water temperatures begin to rise we get a great run of gaffer dolphin. Gaffer dolphins are larger dolphin that get their name because you need a gaff to get them in the boat. When the gaffer dolphin first show up it is not unusual for us to catch a limit of these big dolphins which is a whole lot of meat for the freezer! |
June & July
June and July is a great time of year to catch a wide variety of fish here in Hatteras. Our Hatteras Fishing Charters allows you a chance to catch Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Dolphin, Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna, Wahoo and bottom fish such as Triggerfish, Sea Bass, different species of Tilefish and Snapper, Amberjack, and Grouper. This is the time of year when we start bailing Dolphins, where we can catch a limit of Dolphin very quickly and move on to target other species. Bailer Dolphin earned their name because when you’re bailing them you’re just throwing them in the boat as fast as you can. These fish are in giant schools found around weed lines, sargasso grass patches, and random pieces of float. We are apart of the Billfish Foundation and support the catch and release program. If you catch a billfish on your Hatteras fishing trip, Captain Mike will fill out a release citation form for your billfish release, and you will be mailed a certificate by the State of North Carolina with the specifics of your fish. |
August
The month of August offers some of the best weather we have here on the Outer Banks, and gives you and your crew a great opportunity to have a beautiful day of fishing in Hatteras. August has a great mix of fish with Dolphin, Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Yellowfin & Blackfin Tuna and bottom fish such as Triggerfish, Sea Bass, different species of Tilefish and Snapper, Amberjack, and Grouper. |
September & October
September and October offer some of the best Wahoo fishing in Hatteras. Wahoo is one of the fastest fish in the ocean swimming 60+ mph, they’re lit up with tiger-like stripes, a mouth full of razor blades, and they taste great. There are also Dolphin, Tuna, and Billfish around with a chance to get an early shot at catching King Mackerel with live bait. |
November & December
The late fall, early winter months in Hatteras offer some of the finest live bait King Mackerel fishing found anywhere in the world. Offshore there is typically a good Yellowfin & Blackfin tuna bite and the Bluefins have been known to show up in December!

About Hatteras Island:Hatteras Island extends 60 miles into the Atlantic Ocean with the Gulf Stream and the Labrador currents constantly shaping and reshaping the barrier island. The interaction between these two gigantic "rivers" of water has formed the Diamond Shoals and the Graveyard of the Atlantic which stretches 19 miles out into the ocean. These colliding currents have also created one of the most varied and abundant game fishing areas in the world. Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Blackfin Tuna, Dolphin (mahi mahi), Wahoo, King Mackerel, Cobia, Striped Bass (striper or rockfish), Grouper, Tilefish, Snapper, Triggerfish, and many more species inhabit these waters.
